Through the Years: Fertility in Your 20s, 30s, and 40s

Over the past few decades, women have been told they could have it all: career, love, and a family. Unfortunately, the media has failed to accurately portray how female fertility changes throughout a woman’s lifetime, creating the idea of an endless timeline for making family planning choices. Dr. Mark Denker wants our patients to have a full understanding of fertility so that they can make informed decisions.

Setting the Record Straight

Stories of a 63-year-old woman giving birth and celebrities like Madonna or Nicole Kidman perpetuate the idea that your fertility never diminishes. At Palm Beach Fertility Center, we want you to understand how the female body changes and what you can expect at each stage of your life.

Fertility in Your 20s

Unlike men, who constantly replenish their supply of sperm, women are born with all the eggs they will ever produce. Peak fertility occurs during your twenties. Thanks to new egg freezing technology, a fast-freezing process called vitrification, women in this age range can preserve their eggs for use until they are ready to start families.

Fertility in Your 30s

During this period, healthy women will usually conceive after 7 to 9 months of regular, timed intercourse. If you haven’t had any luck and have been trying for over 12 months (6 months for women over 35), consult a fertility specialist like Dr. Denker and consider a complete fertility evaluation.

Fertility in Your 40s

Many women don’t realize that by age 40, over 50 percent of your eggs may have chromosomal abnormalities. At this point, you only have a five percent of getting pregnant on your own. Using donor eggs offers older women an option for conceiving that reduces the risks of problems and increases the chances for success.
