Researchers Find Frequent Walks Boosts Male Fertility

Researchers in Britain, where one in seven couples experience difficulty in conceiving, found that going for a walk three times a week can help boost fertility in men. Even those who live rather sedentary lifestyles can improve sperm quality in as little as six months by implementing a little bit of exercise. Exercise helps fight off oxidative stress, which takes a toll on sperm quality and count, which can then impact fertility.

The Study

Public perception of infertility remains that it’s a female issue, but nearly half of IVF cycles are attributed to male factors. The study used 261 healthy men, ages 25-40, who had previously done light exercise. The men were divided into different groups, one on which participated in continuous moderate training over the course of 24 weeks. The first 12 weeks were spent with light walking and jogging for 30 minutes per day, three or four times a week. During the last 12 weeks of the study, researchers increased this to 40-45 minutes of walking and jogging, four to six times a week.

The results were compared to a group doing higher intensity exercise, and another group that did none at all. At the conclusion of the study, researchers found that the group of men who were in the group that took part in moderate exercise had the best results. When compared to men who did not exercise at all, their volume of sperm increased by 8.3 percent.
