Weight Loss Before Treatment May Improve Odds For Women With PCOS

According to two studies funded by the National Institutes of Health, overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), may increase their pregnancy odds if they lose weight before undergoing their fertility treatment. While there’s no known cure to PCOS, it remains as one of the most common hormonal endocrine disorders in women. The condition causes cyst-like sacs to grow on the ovaries, which can result in a number of side effects including infertility, obesity, excessive facial and body hair, and acne.

The Study

In one study, women with PCOS began to receive clomiphene, an ovulation-inducing drug. In another study, 147 women with the same condition underwent a weight loss program that involved a low-calorie diet, physical exercise, and weight loss medicine before taking the clomiphene. At the end of the study, researchers found that women who were given the fertility medication without the weight loss program had an ovulation rate of 44.7% and a live birth rate of 10.2%. The other group of women who lost weight before receiving treatment, however, were found to have a 62% ovulation rate and a 25% live birth rate.
