What is Secondary Infertility?

Secondary infertility is defined as the difficulty to become pregnant or carry a pregnancy to term, following the birth of one or more children. For many individuals, becoming pregnant and having their first child was obstacle-free. In this blog, our Boca Raton infertility specialist explains possible causes of secondary infertility and how it can be treated.

Reproductive Age

One of the most common causes of secondary infertility is age. Although you had no problem getting pregnant with your first child, it’s likely that a few years have passed. Women are born with all of the eggs she will ever have – as she ages, however, her ovarian reserve will weaken, which will decrease the quality and quantity of eggs.

Sperm Quality and Quantity

In the same way a woman’s fertility fluctuates as she gets older, so can a man’s. Changes in your partner’s health, or if he has started a new type of medication can affect sperm count and quality of sperm. These changes can be measured and inspected with an infertility evaluation.
