What Is Surrogacy?

Surrogacy refers to the process of carrying a fertilized egg (embryo) in her uterus on behalf of the intended mother.

  • There are two kinds of surrogacy:
  • Classic Surrogacy
  • Gestational Surrogacy

How Is a Surrogate Mother Selected?

We understand that choosing a surrogate mother can be an overwhelming process, but we want to make the process as natural and seamless as possible. Gestational surrogates have included relatives, friends, workmates, and other close peers. In other circumstances, surrogates have never met the couple before but have been approved and screened according to our standards.

  • In the past, we have found:
  • The best candidates are highly committed women under 40
  • Women who are healthy and have proven fertility
  • Women who have successfully birthed at least one healthy child

All potential surrogates will undergo medical and psychological testing and are advised to seek legal advice before the process. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer to surrogacy. Choosing a surrogate simply must fit your goals, your family, and your comfort.

What Does the Surrogacy Process Include?

Once a surrogate mother has been selected, she will undergo a "mock cycle." During this cycle, she will be given most or all of the fertility hormones administered during the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) process. This allows the physicians to make sure that there are no problems with the uterine lining. After the cycle is complete there will be a "mock transfer" where the cervix angle and uterine cavity length are measured in preparation for the actual transfer.

Once these steps are complete, the surrogacy process will also include:

  • The surrogate and female partner or egg donor are then given birth control pills to synchronize their menstrual cycles.
  • Lupron, estrogen and other medications are then given to stimulate fertility in the donor and prepare the uterine lining in the surrogate.
  • The eggs are retrieved and fertilized with the male partner or donor's sperm.
  • One or more are transferred to the surrogate.

Once the embryo has been successfully transferred to the surrogate, the surrogate mother will then carry the child to term, resulting in a successful pregnancy. Any unused embryos may be frozen.
