Dr. Mark Denker, a fertility specialist in Boca Raton helped the 38-year-old get pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Four month old Michah was born as a result.

Maryann struggled with infertility trying to conceive later in life. In a committed relationship with a good job, she was missing one thing, a baby. After several unsuccessful IUIs (intrauterine insemination) Maryann and her partner finally succeeded with an in vitro fertilization cycle, IVF completed on Mother’s Day 2012. a year later they are celebrating their first Mother’s Day as a family.

For alternative couples, the hurdles to have a family can seem insurmountable.

Maryann painfully remembers being turned away when she approached her OBGYN about help getting pregnant. “I had been going there for years and they knew of my same sex relationship but openly admitted that they could not be a part of helping me become a parent”. This was the first time she had been discriminated against openly and so very personally. “I cried, but quickly regrouped and decided I wouldn’t let it stop me.” says, Maryann.

Maryann got online, found Palm Beach Fertility Center and Dr. Denker. “I called Dr. Denker that same day. I told the receptionist who I was and what I wanted and that I needed to know if they had an issue with that. They welcomed me and we started the process.”

From the call to Dr. Denker to the delivery of her son was 2 roller coaster years. “Was it worth it?” asks Maryann. “You have no idea. I would do everything, every shot, every tear, every procedure all of it a hundred times over to be where I am today, to come home every day and see my son. It’s the most amazing feeling, being a mom.”

Maryann wish is that everyone; straight, single or LGBT that’s ready to have and love a baby is welcomed with open arms. And that her story helps other people going through similar fertility issues.

But before they can know these wonders, they first have to conceive. Conception can be difficult for some couples; in fact, one in 8 couples experiences problems getting pregnant. Dr. Mark Denker, founder of Palm Beach Fertility Center, says many issues can contribute to female infertility.

Female infertility may be caused by:

Lack of ovulation, or anovulation

Advanced maternal age, and decreased ovarian function

Obesity & weight fluctuation

Eating disorders & poor nutrition

Cancer treatment

Uterine scar tissue from STDs or endometriosis

Some of these barriers to getting pregnant are health issues, some are outside factors, and others are lifestyle choices. Many times, infertility is a result of more than one of these factors. Luckily, most of these issues can be eliminated with medicine or a change in lifestyle.

Testing for Female Infertility

Couples that have tried to conceive for a year or longer may need to be tested to determine the specific barrier to pregnancy. Palm Beach Fertility Center’s fertility specialist Dr. Mark Denker will start with specific tests to determine the cause of female infertility. The preliminary examinations include:

Blood tests

Pelvic ultrasounds

Imaging procedure to check patency of the fallopian tubes

Hysterosalpingography (HSG) tests, or “dye tests,” effectively check for fallopian tube occlusions and uterine defects. HSG tests are similar to pelvic exams, but they use dye to view fallopian tube and uterine irregularities. “Fem-Vue” is a more advanced test that allows fertility doctors to view the fallopian tubes without X-rays or contrast solution, says Dr. Mark Denker. Once Dr. Mark Denker determines the cause of your infertility, we can begin treatment.

Dr. Mark Denker will spend time with each patient to determine the best course of fertility treatment. To increase female fertility, we also must treat any present medical conditions, such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts or infection. Medium to severe scar tissue caused by endometriosis can make implantation difficult. Our fertility specialist at Palm Beach Fertility can remove endometrial tissue temporarily to allow a window for conception.

If you and your partner are having trouble conceiving, Dr. Mark Denker and his team want to help. Call 800.953.BABY today to schedule an appointment, and we will be happy to determine your individual fertility needs.

Every year, he celebrates victory over infertility with women that overcome physical, emotional and financial hurdles to become mothers.

For Maryann Maguire, Mother’s Day was a painful occasion for many years because she was childless and because she was approaching 40.

Although in a long-term, committed relationship as a same-sex couple, Maryann feared she would never have children. Then, she met Dr. Denker.

This May, Maryann will hold her baby boy especially close as she celebrates her first Mother’s Day, and reflects on the long road to making her dream come true.

“Honestly, I thought my journey was going to be so different from what it turned out to be,” she says. “I thought it would have been easier. I ran into road-blocks I really didn’t expect.”

Dr. Denker explains the series of infertility treatments that Maryann and her partner progressed through, from the first appointment to pregnancy.

Maryann’s fertility regimen included:

Multiple cycles of Clomid and intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm. (A typical fertility treatment option for same-sex couples and single women)

Minimally invasive fertility surgery to correct a blocked fallopian tube.

In-vitro fertilization (IVF), which ultimately resulted in a pregnancy.

The call that Maryann made to Dr. Denker’s Palm Beach fertility center was her last-ditch effort to conceive. She had already been turned away as a prospective adoptive parent by the Florida foster care system. Then, her longtime obgyn opted not to help her try to get pregnant.

Dr. Denker says that he adheres to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Ethics Committee edict that all persons, regardless of marital status or sexual orientation, should have access to fertility care.

ASRM Ethics Committe Alternative Parenting

Maryann says: “I always believed I would adopt a child having been raised in the foster care system myself. I started to think maybe I could carry my own child. I was getting closer to 40, and time felt like it was running out for me.”

She was correct. The odds of conceiving after a woman’s 40th birthday drop to 5 percent in a given month, so Dr. Denker quickly started the process to diagnose and treat Maryann’s infertility.

The resolution she sought began with an online search, where Maryann found Palm Beach Fertility Center and Dr. Denker. She called that day, explained her unique situation as part of a same-sex couple, and was welcomed to the fertility clinic.

It was IVF that led to a positive pregnancy test. “I could only afford one attempt, and then I was going to call it quits,” says Maryann. “I had given it my best effort. The roller coaster of emotions, all the daily injections and the 3 negative IUIs–time and time again–were all hard to handle.”

Fertility treatment: Was it worth it?

“You have no idea,” says the new mom. “I would do everything–every shot, every tear, every procedure–all of it, a hundred times over. To come home every day, and see my son … it’s the most amazing feeling, being a mom.“

The options for women in same-sex couples include IUI with donor sperm, IVF with donor sperm, or collaborative pregnancy, also called reciprocal in-vitro fertilization (IVF). With reciprocal IVF, one partner supplies the egg through ovulation induction, donor sperm creates the embryo, and then the other partner carries the pregnancy.

According to the Child Welfare League of America, up to 9 million American children have same-sex parents. https://www.cwla.org/programs/culture/glbtqposition.htm.

Dr. Denker was proud to play a part in helping Maryann fulfill her dream of becoming a mother. “Advances in reproductive medicine make it possible for more and more people to experience the joy of pregnancy and incredible, lifelong fulfillment as a parent. As a physician and a dad, I’m happy to offer fertility treatment turning points to all men and women that wish to get pregnant.”

The newest fertility enhancing technique is known as EVIE and is a pump that slowly releases sperm gradually over a period of several hours. EVIE more closely emulates nature and has been shown to double pregnancy rates over traditional IUI, making it more cost effective than in-vitro fertilization and an appealing choice for couples who have trouble conceiving and have limited financial resources. How does EVIE work? The EVIE catheter is placed in the cervix by Dr. Denker after the sperm is prepared in the laboratory at the Palm Beach Fertility Center. A tiny pump within a disposable catheter slowly releases the sperm into the uterus and the device is attached to the patient’s leg, who may then leave the clinic and go home or go shopping. After the sperm is released over a 3 to 4 hour period, the woman pushes a button, releases the device and disposes of it in the trash. No visit to the doctor is required!

Dr. Denker and all “my” wonderful girls,

Hello everyone. First let me start off by telling you all that we really miss coming to see you! You have all been such an amazing part of our story and I think of each of you often. Things have been progressing very well for us, and we have been seeing my regular OB. Everyone is taking good care of us- nothing like you guys of course, but that goes without saying!

God has worked so many amazing miracles for us- from assisting each of you in proving the best care and treatment for us throughout our IVF process, to sustaining this little life with seemingly impossible odds from day one. I feel so blessed to have been a patient in your office, let alone so blessed to be given this amazing miracle that continues to grow inside of me!

With that said, God has blessed us with yet another amazing miracle that I couldn’t wait to share with you… we are getting our girl after all!!! We found out this week that we are having a baby girl! So much for the need to select eggs, and I responded, “that’s ok, I only need one”- I’m sure you laughed to yourself thinking “that’s what you think.” But with prayer and the grace of God, all things are possible. A GIRL!!! After every other amazing miracle each step of the way- A GIRL!!!

I am still overwhelmed by the news. I was sobbing with my hands covering my face and my entire body trembling the moment I heard the letter ‘g’ coming from the technician’s mouth. She didn’t even get the full word out before I couldn’t control how overwhelmed I felt with gratitude and emotion…towards each of you and toward God, of course. Ed had to assure the tech that my tears were that of joy because I couldn’t even speak, and I couldn’t stop sobbing! Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart for what you have given us and the compassion and friendship you have shown us throughout our time together.

I almost forgot- while in the waiting room at Dr. Patel’s I met a patient of yours. I forget her name but she s a few weeks behind me- and she is already really showing. She heard my story at your office- didn’t know who I was of course, but knew all about our amazing miracle story and she was so happy to meet me in person. (I’m a celebrity now!) She had three eggs fertilize- her second pregnancy. And Dr. D assisted her with her first pregnancy as well. It was quite a coincidence to meet a patient of yours in that way.

At any rate, I thought you would be happy and amazed to hear the news. Enclosed are some pictures form the ultrasound this week- a couple in 3D. So far, everything is perfect. I have moved into my 17th week- I really don’t look much bigger though. Once I start really showing, I will stop by to show off the new me!

I still need to get a group shot of all of you together for the baby book, please! Also, I would love to meet the embryologist in person if that would ever be possible. And, I haven’t forgotten about the possibility of Dr. D. being at our delivery so don’t let him think he is off the hook just yet!

A GIRL…can you believe it…A GIRL!!!!!!!!

Ed, Terra, and little-girl
