New therapies for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss provide new hope for many couples
Mark Denker, M.D.

The loss of pregnancy is one of the most difficult events anyone can face. Yet one out of every five pregnancies ends before the sixth month, bringing a devastating loss to many hopeful women and family members. Infertility specialists at the Palm Beach Fertility Center are working to improve these statistics by providing comprehensive care in evaluating and managing women with recurrent pregnancy loss.

Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined as three or more consecutive spontaneous miscarriages that occur during the first 22 weeks of pregnancy. Each pregnancy involves different circumstances. Therefore, it is important for you to consult a physician if you think you have experienced any of the following:

  • Any pregnancy loss after three months of development
  • Two consecutive miscarriages during the first three months of pregnancy
  • Pregnancy loss after age 35

Many factors can cause pregnancy loss. The following conditions can all increase your chance of losing a pregnancy:

Chromosome Abnormalities: The majority of early pregnancy losses are caused by genetic errors that are present in the growing embryo during the early stages of development. Many losses are considered unavoidable, but chromosomal screening and counseling of couples can identify and help avoid possible complications during future pregnancies.

Endocrine Dysfunction: Proper hormone balance, controlled by the body's endocrine system, is essential to a healthy pregnancy. Hormones aid in controlling the ability of the mother's body to accept and nurture a developing child.

Immunologic Conditions: Current evidence suggests that up to one-third of all pregnancy losses may be due to a dysfunction of the patient's immune system. Some women do not produce the antibody that protects the developing fetus from rejection. Other diseases of the immune system such as lupus or collagen diseases are also associated. New therapies for these conditions are offered at the Palm Beach Fertility Center.

Structural Abnormalities: Abnormalities of the uterus and cervix can increase the chance of miscarriage or premature delivery, especially during the second trimester.

Depending on the cause of recurrent pregnancy loss, one or more of the following therapies may be beneficial:

  • Corrective surgery
  • Immunologic therapy
  • Hormonal therapy
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Anticoagulant therapy
  • Genetic counseling

After appropriate evaluation and treatment, over 85% of women with recurrent pregnancy loss will have a successful live birth.

The PBFC is currently conducting a study using a new combination of existing medications including Aspirin, Heparin and progesterone. Preliminary results indicate an 85% success rate with this treatment. If you or anyone you know has a history of recurrent pregnancy loss, please contact Dr. Denker for more information about this study.
