New AMH Fertility Test Can Predict Egg Reserve

AMH (anti-mullerian hormone) is a new fertility blood test that gives women a better idea about their ovarian reserve, or the quantity of the eggs a woman has left. At Palm Beach Fertility Center, we have more eggs to work with when a woman has an increased ovarian reserve. As women age, they begin to lose eggs more rapidly, and will eventually go into menopause once they begin to run out.

Age and Infertility

It is well known that as women age, their ovarian reserve decreases. That said, women of the same age can have different rates of decline. This is why ovarian reserve testing with Palm Beach Fertility Center is very important. AMH testing, as part of a woman’s fertility evaluation, provides a key piece of the puzzle.

AMH is a hormone that is produced by the granulosa cells, which are found around the eggs. It is not necessary to schedule AMH testing on a specific cycle day, which makes testing convenient for the patient. AMH levels do not fluctuate during the menstrual cycle because they are gonadotropin independent. That means that hormonal fluctuations do not affect AMH levels.

AMH testing is easily available and allows women to have their results and know their fertility potential in a short amount of time.

What is a Normal AMH?

A normal AMH level is between 1-3 mcg/L. A low AMH value would indicate a diminished ovarian reserve. This essentially means that a more aggressive fertility treatment option may be recommended, and Dr. Mark Denker may have you on higher doses of stimulation medications. A low AMH value also lets a woman know that she should consider conceiving earlier in her life, or egg freezing to preserve her fertility potential.

In addition, women with an AMH level greater than 3 may have PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). PCOS causes anovulation and other physical symptoms. Women with PCOS have many small follicles, or fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries that contain the eggs. Women with PCOS require close monitoring and lower dosages of gonadotropins to avoid Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome.

Inexpensive AMH testing can paint a clear picture about ovarian reserve. The results of the AMH test are helpful in allowing Dr. Denker to determine the best treatment options for the patient. Every woman should have an AMH test to empower an informed decision about fertility potential.
