Coping with Infertility Stress During the Holidays

Even under the best circumstances, holidays can be extremely stressful. In the hustle and bustle of shopping, parties, and family gatherings, oftentimes individuals feel pressure from relatives and friends on the various aspects of their lives. For those struggling with infertility, however, being asked insensitive questions during the holiday season can be difficult to deal with. In this blog, our Boca Rotan fertility doctor shares tips on how to manage infertility stress during the holiday season.

Be Selective With Holiday Parties

During this time of year, it’s very common to receive a handful of invitations to various social functions. While attending these gatherings, some may ask you and your partner if you’re expecting children or of you foresee having a child in the future. There may be parties where you know there will be a lot of children or pregnant women – you don’t have to feel guilty about being selective in which parties you attend. This is a time where you should concentrate on helping yourself and your partner.

Spend Time Doing What You Like

Taking the time to prepare your favorite meal, taking long walks, or even picking up a new hobby can help you clear your mind of the stress associated with infertility. You can use this opportunity to create new traditions for just you and your partner. That being said, however, you should allow yourself to feel upset – concealing or suppressing your emotions does more harm than good.

Prepare How You Will Handle Questions

There’s a possibility that you’ll be asked an insensitive question by a distant relative or acquaintance – oftentimes, it’s unavoidable. Prepare how you will handle such questions beforehand by setting aside time with your partner and discussing how you two should best approach it. Ensuring that you and your partner are on the same page reinforces the feeling of a support system for when times get especially difficult.
