Understanding IVF Success Rates by Age

June 15, 2025

Age is one of the most significant factors affecting IVF success rates. Understanding how age impacts fertility can help you make informed decisions about your treatment timeline.

Age plays a critical role in determining IVF success rates. While advances in reproductive technology have made it possible for women of various ages to conceive, understanding the relationship between age and fertility is essential for setting realistic expectations.

How Age Affects IVF Success

Women under 35 typically have the highest IVF success rates, with live birth rates per cycle averaging 40-50%. Between ages 35-37, success rates begin to decline to approximately 30-35%. For women aged 38-40, rates drop to around 20-25%, and for those over 40, rates are typically 10-15%.

Why Age Matters

The primary reason age affects IVF success is egg quality. As women age, the number and quality of eggs decrease naturally. This process accelerates after age 35 and becomes more pronounced after 40.

Options for Older Patients

For patients concerned about age-related fertility decline, several options exist including egg freezing for fertility preservation, donor egg IVF, and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) to select the healthiest embryos.

At Palm Beach Fertility Center, we create personalized treatment plans that account for each patient's unique situation, including age-related factors. Schedule a consultation to discuss your options.
