Trying for a child can be an incredibly stressful and exciting process. However, that stress increases the longer a couple goes without successful implantation. One scientific study followed 346 women attempting to get pregnant. At the end of the study, researchers concluded that most couples successfully conceive within a year. If you and your partner have been trying with no success for a year or more, it may be time to see a fertility specialist.

Am I Infertile?

Only seeing a fertility therapist can give you a solid answer to that question. However, it may help to understand exactly what infertility is and how it can change depending on various circumstances. In certain cases, environmental factors can decrease fertility. For example, fertilization takes longer with the following people:

  • Older couples
  • Smokers
  • Heavy drinkers
  • Those with weight issues (overweight or underweight)

Exposure to toxic chemicals (present in pollution, pesticides, and plastics) can also cause fertility problems. Certain chemicals can decrease a couple's ability to conceive by 29 percent.

Barring environmental influence, some people have physical impediments that can cause infertility. For example, physical defects such as undescended testicles, enlarged veins or blocked ducts in the testes, an abnormal cervical opening, or a blocked fallopian tube can all contribute to infertility. Conditions such as endometriosis (when endometrial tissue grows on the outside of the uterus), diabetes, and cystic fibrosis also make conception difficult. Even communicable diseases, such as mumps, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, can cause infertility. Some of these factors can be corrected with surgery or medication, but you must first identify the problem.

There are an enormous number of variables to consider when people want to have a child and can't seem to. Seeing an infertility therapist can get you answers and may be able to increase your chances for conception. A fertility specialist can also recommend a therapist that can help you cope with the stress and anxiety surrounding infertility.
