Helping You Find the Rainbow After the Storm

If you or a loved one has dealt with the loss of a pregnancy, you know how traumatizing the experience can be. 1 in 4 women will lose a pregnancy at some point in their lives, and while those numbers are substantial, it doesn’t take away from the physical and mental toll a miscarriage takes on any woman who goes through one. Some women may even experience multiple miscarriages, which could be a sign of fertility issues in one or both partners.

That’s why we are highlighting miscarriage awareness and how women can find hope after going through loss. Despite the prevalence of pregnancy loss, it is still widely undiscussed amongst the public, which can cause women to feel increasingly isolated and alone during an already traumatic time. If you have been trying to conceive and have lost one or more pregnancies, Palm Beach Fertility Center is here for you. We can test samples from both you and your partner (if applicable) to determine the cause of the miscarriages and recommend fertility treatments.

Conceiving a Baby After Miscarriage

You may have heard the saying, “after every storm comes a rainbow.” Many women relate this to conceiving a baby after miscarriage, sometimes referred to as a “rainbow baby.” Fortunately, just because you lose a pregnancy, it doesn’t mean all hope is lost – even if it may feel that way at the time. Plenty of women go on to conceive perfectly healthy babies after experiencing a miscarriage, even those who have experienced multiple miscarriages.

In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists states that approximately 65% of women will have successful pregnancies after unexplained repeated miscarriages. A fertility specialist can conduct certain diagnostic tests to determine your fertility levels, in order to gauge your risk of pregnancy loss and recommend fertility treatments for increased chances of a successful pregnancy the next time you conceive. These tests include, but are not limited to:

  • Karyotyping
  • Hysterosalpingograms
  • Vaginal ultrasounds
  • Blood hormone level test
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Glucose screening

Miscarriage Signs and Symptoms

Miscarriages can occur at any point during a pregnancy, but they are most common during the first trimester, typically around 13 weeks. This can make it difficult to determine what feels “right” during a pregnancy. Additionally, it can also cause added stress and anxiety around the overall health and well-being of both mother and baby, including knowing when it’s safe to announce the pregnancy to others.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, common warning signs of miscarriage include, but are not limited to:

  • Light spotting that becomes heavier (blood may be pink, red, or brown)
  • A sudden gush of blood
  • Brown or black discharge (may resemble coffee grounds)
  • Mild to severe back pain
  • Gradual or sudden weight loss
  • Vaginal discharge with a white-pink color
  • Contractions (may occur every 5-20 minutes)
  • Clots that look like tissue
  • Sudden decrease in pregnancy symptoms
