What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. It most commonly involves the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may also spread beyond the pelvic region.

How Does Endometriosis Impact Fertility?

Endometriosis can influence fertility in several ways. One of the primary impacts on fertility is the distortion of pelvic anatomy. Endometriosis can lead to adhesions and scarred fallopian tubes, which can disrupt the normal movement of the egg and sperm. Inflammation caused by endometriosis can also create a hostile environment for conception.

Between 30% to 50% of women with endometriosis experience difficulty achieving viable pregnancy. However, it is important to note that having endometriosis does not automatically mean you will experience infertility. The relationship between endometriosis and fertility is complex and influenced by many factors, such as the extent of the condition and its location within the reproductive system.
